Job Description

IEM is the largest independent full-line manufacturer of custom electrical distribution and power quality equipment in North America. Formed in 1957, IEM has delivered customer-specific solutions to meet the ever-changing power requirements of growth industries in North America for over half a century.

At IEM, we’re not just growing – we're thriving! Our rapid expansion means new opportunities are always on the horizon. If you’re someone who gets excited by making an impact through interesting challenges, you’ll feel right at home.

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

The purpose of the Product Services Electrical Component Tester is to support the integrity and effectiveness of the Return Material Authorization (RMA) process by conducting accurate and timely testing of electrical components returned from Field Service operations. This position is responsible for evaluating a range of components, including but not limited to breakers, meters, and controllers, to determine potential defects and performance issues. The findings generated from testing activities directly inform root cause analyses and assist in making accurate disposition decisions.

The Electrical Component Tester works closely with Product Services, Engineering, and Field Service teams to ensure that testing data is captured, communicated, and used to improve product reliability and service outcomes. In addition to technical testing, this role requires strong attention to detail, proficiency with data entry and digital tools, and the ability to operate efficiently in a fast-paced environment. By delivering precise, well-documented assessments of returned components, the Electrical Component Tester plays a vital role in quality assurance, continuous improvement, and customer satisfaction.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Collaborate with Field Service Management, Engineering, and Quality teams to identify and prioritize electrical components requiring testing.
  • Author and maintain standardized Operating Procedures and develop test scripts for consistent and effective evaluation of electrical components.
  • Utilize strong wiring skills to perform wire checks, visual inspections, and basic troubleshooting prior to testing.
  • Set up and connect equipment for testing activities, ensuring correct positioning and configuration in accordance with safety and procedural guidelines.
  • Conduct functional testing of electrical components and accurately document findings related to performance, root cause analysis, and final disposition.
  • Complete all required documentation, including Material Review Reports (MRR), Corrective Action Reports (CAR), and other testing logs or quality records.
  • Participate in the Material Review Board (MRB) process to support decision-making related to defective or returned materials.
  • Develop and track Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to evaluate the effectiveness, timeliness, and quality of the testing process.
  • Manage the movement of materials through the testing workflow, ensuring timely processing and communication across departments.
  • Proactively identify opportunities to improve testing procedures, tools, and documentation to enhance process efficiency and support organizational goals.
  • Maintain oversight of calibration schedules and preventative maintenance for all test bench equipment, meters, and measurement tools used in Field Service Product Services (FS-PS) testing.
  • Assist with periodic audits of Field Service testing equipment to ensure compliance and operational readiness.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.

COMPETENCIES:

  • Electrical Knowledge & Technical Interpretation: Demonstrates a strong understanding of electrical theory and components—including breakers, transfer switches, transformers, meters, and PLCs—and accurately interprets electrical diagrams, safety protocols, and communication protocols (e.g., Modbus, TCP/IP) to support testing and troubleshooting.
  • Safety & Attention to Detail: Maintains a thorough and safety-conscious approach when conducting evaluations, carefully documenting results, and identifying potential component defects to support accurate analysis and prevent hazards.
  • Communication & Collaboration: Effectively communicates technical findings both verbally and in writing, while working closely with Field Service, Engineering, Quality, and Production teams to ensure alignment and problem resolution.
  • Technical & Digital Proficiency: Utilizes ERP systems and common software tools (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) to document test outcomes, track materials, and support efficient workflow management.
  • Problem Solving & Analytical Thinking: Applies logical reasoning and technical skills to identify failure causes, recommend corrective actions, and contribute to continuous improvement in component reliability.
  • Independence & Adaptability: Works effectively both independently and within team environments, adapting to shifting priorities and demonstrating initiative in learning and skill development.
  • Organization & Time Management: Manages tasks and priorities in a structured, timely manner to meet testing schedules and support overall operational efficiency.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience testing electrical components, including breakers, meters, controllers, or similar equipment.
  • • Hands-on experience performing diagnostic testing within a Quality Control (QC) or Return Material Authorization (RMA) process is required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience with inventory management systems such as Infor or Oracle preferred.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail, particularly in logistics and materials coordination.
  • Exceptional organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks, manage time, and multitask effectively in a fast-paced setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently while contributing to a collaborative team environment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively across departments and with external vendors.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL/ENVIRONMENTAL:

Vision: Long periods of close work on a computer screen.
